The Maiden as a Map
67cm × 103cm
Tufted tapestry mounted on MDF board.
The Maiden as a Map draws upon the medieval tradition of maps as spiritual tools rather than true representations of geography. This work imagines the inner world of the Maiden as a symbolic terrain of growth. Blossoming roses and verdant spring gardens surround a depiction of the medieval labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral.
Unlike a maze which is designed to confuse you, this labyrinth contains a single winding path leading toward the eye of self — a symbol of self-knowledge. It suggests that there are no wrong turns on the journey toward understanding oneself, but the journey to get there is long and winding.
Each Hyperworlds sequence is designed as a complete three-part set. Collectors who acquire both large works (landscape and map) will receive the smaller piece (relic) as part of the complete collection.
