The Crone as a Map

Tufted tapestry mounted on MDF board.

The Crone as a Map is the final map within the Hyperworlds collection. Drawing from the medieval tradition of maps as ideological diagrams rather than literal geography.

A keyhole representing knowledge accumulated over a lifetime is encircled by the ouroboros. The ouroboros is the ancient image of a snake eating its own tail — one of the oldest recurring symbols in human history. The ouroboros represents the cyclical nature of existence: death and rebirth existing as part of the same continuous process.

A large waning crescent moon cradles both the ouroboros and the keyhole, symbolising the Crone archetype. Traditionally associated with the final phase of life, the Crone is represented here not as a figure of disappearance, but as a keeper of wisdom. When the knowledge is passed onto younger generations, the Crone continues to exist through memory. The end of a life is not really an ending, but is a transition.

Each Hyperworlds sequence is designed as a complete three-part set. Collectors who acquire both large works (landscape and map) will receive the smaller piece (relic) as part of the complete collection.

The Crone as a Landscape is the final stop in the journey through Hyperworlds. This piece represents the last stage in the cycle of life and explores the archetype of the “Crone” as a figure of wisdom. The realm is marked by the waning crescent moon — a symbol associated with the end of a cycle and a new one beginning.

An island rises from a dark pool. A staircase ascends toward a gateway crowned with blooming moonflowers. Embedded within the wall beside the gateway is a keyhole, suggesting that passage into the next stage requires knowledge. Within this world, the Crone carries the metaphorical key — not through physical power, but through experience and accumulated wisdom.

Four constellations appear in the night sky: Corvus, Corona Borealis, Crater (The Cup), and Cassiopeia. These celestial forms reinforce themes of guidance and feminine mythology.

Rather than presenting the end of life as disappearance, the work frames it as a passage into another state of knowing. The Crone stands at the gateway between worlds — a keeper of memory and the knowledge needed to begin again.

The Crone’s Relic

The Crone’s Relic depicts an imagined object from the realm of the Crone within the Hyperworlds collection. The central waning crescent moon represents the Crone archetype — the final stage of womanhood associated with wisdom and the closing of a life cycle before renewal begins again.

The key symbolises knowledge and understanding accumulated over a lifetime. This key suggests access: the ability to contribute to the continuing cycle of womanhood by passing wisdom on to future generations.

A single star appears as a subtle reference to feminine constellations. Like the stars used for guidance throughout history, the Crone becomes a figure who guides others through experience and knowledge.
