Soft Atlas

$480.00

80 x 80 cm

Yarn, fabric, wood board

Soft Atlas explores the expressive possibilities of thread through contrasting surface textures.

Conceived as a precursor to an ongoing fantasy map series, the piece functions as an abstract dreamscape rather than a literal cartography. It draws on the way memory is experienced through fragments and sensation rather than clarity or accuracy.

The circular form suggests a distorted field of vision similar to a fish-eye lens. Within this field, thread becomes both structure and narrative.

This work was developed as an open experiment in materials range. Loop and cut pile appear in both high and low relief to create shifts in density and depth. These tactile passages are interrupted by areas of flat glittering canvas, a fan of holographic PVC and a section of faux fur. Together these materials extend the language of thread beyond the tufted surface.

A winding road moves through the abstraction as a quiet point of orientation. It gestures toward journey and identity without resolving into a specific place.

As with much of my work, Soft Atlas engages with memories and identity as something unstable and constructed.
